Check-patterned fabric web is laid in registered manner in successive layers which are cut from the web in that the fabric is provided at spaced intervals along the weft yarns corresp. to the checks with fluorescent or magnetic signal generating strips and feeding the fabric to a registering cylinder subdivided into spaced rollers, stopping successive rollers as the strip is moved into contact with the rollers and feeding the fabric forward by driving all the rollers at the same speed until the next strip has reached the first end roller, all of which are associated with sensing heads which control the stopping of the rollers. Fabric is laid in superposed layers in orthogonally registered manner.
