A force (6) is introduced via a force-introducing block (7) onto a dielectric (8) which is pressed against a stop (11). An AC voltage source (5) transmits a dielectric displacement current through the dielectric (8) by means of an electrode pair (1 and 2). The mechanical tension caused by the force (6) in the dielectric (8) produces an anisotropy of the dielectric properties of the dielectric (8). The symmetry of the distribution of the displacement current is disturbed, and a compensating current flows from the dielectric (8) via a second electrode pair (3, 4) and a measuring instrument (9). The current through the measuring instrument (9) is then a measure of the force (6). <IMAGE>
