The downhill brake to be controlled is in a run-off layout in railway sidings. Goods wagons are detached from trains and forwarded on sloping tracks for disposal to different points, with conveyor devices in the dispersal tracks. Each detachment following a previous detachment is braked in a downhill run brake section to a run-out speed derived for its length of travel up to the point of separation from the previous one. This produces a running time which is at least as long as that of the preceding detachment, increasing with a growing interval for the following detachment.
