1513603 Envelope gumming apparatus CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL CORP 24 April 1976 16752/76 Heading B2L Apparatus for applying sealing material to the facing closure flap and body portion of an envelope comprises drivable endless continuous conveying means 32, for conveying a series of envelopes, said conveying means gripping each envelope along a folded edge portion thereof; means 58 proximate conveyor 32 for successively feeding each envelope 10 on to the conveyor in a generally horizontal plane, with the flap in a closed position, flap opening means (not shown) for unfolding the flap to a generally horizontal open position, sealing material applicator 88 for selectively applying sealing material to desired portions of the envelope, drying means 98 for drying the sealing material, and means 46 for removing from the conveyor the envelopes for collection. The conveyor 32 may comprise a double belt, the inner of rubber and the outer of canvas, passing over pulleys 44; just before unloading station 46 the outer belt is diverted over idler rolls 50, 52, 54, 56 and drive roll 57 before re-contacting the inner belt as shown just after loading station 58. The flap opening means is a rod which becomes interposed between the closed flap and envelope body, and is shaped so as to open the flap as the envelope passes thereover (Fig. 4, not shown). Latex in tray 84 is carried by rollers 86 to applicator roll 88, and the coated envelopes pass to electrostatic dryer 98, where a herring-bone configuration of alternate charged and earthed electrodes dries the latex; means may be provided for counting the envelopes, and for disconnecting the applicator roll from the conveyor should a breakdown occur. |
