In the arrangement shown, a core 10 is axially reciprocated in a housing 6 by selectively energising two coils 8, 9. The core alternately frictionally engages two bodies 14, 15, and they in turn cause two sets of balls 21, 22 to be forced along two sets of inclined slots 23, 24 in a shaft 1. The shaft 1 is thereby rotated alternately in opposite directions, or continuously in the same direction, depending on how the slots 23, 24 are inclined to each other.
