In a cheap, high yield process 5-carbethoxycytosine is hydrolysed, pref. with NaOH, to 5-carboxycytosin which is then decarboxylated, pref. by heating in quinoline at 240 degrees C, to give cytosine. Cytosine may be converted to cytidine and 2'-deoxy-cytidine. Cytosine may also be used to make modifications of naturally occurring nucleosides. |
