1452644 Electrolytic preparation of N-phosphonomethylglycine esters MONSANTO CO 6 Nov 1974 [7 Nov 1973] 47915/74 Heading C2P [Also in Division C7] A triester of N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine is produced by subjecting a solution of a tetraester of N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid in an organic solvent containing an electrolyte to electric current, said solvent being one in which both the tetraester and the supporting electrolyte are soluble. Preferably, the electric current is a direct current the supporting electrolyte is a metal, ammonium or alkylammonium perchlorate, fluoroborate, acetate, ethylsulphate, toluenesulphonate or, especially, hexafluorophosphate. The solvent may be a nitro compound, a halogenated hydrocarbon, an ether or, especially, a nitrile and the electrodes used to produce the electric current may be made of lead, carbon, lead sulphate, a noble metal or a metal oxide. The products may be hydrolysed to give N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, a herbicide. |
