The disconnector has an automatic blow-out piston driving sulphur hexafluoride to extinguish the arc discharge when the contacts open. The moving contact (30) is hollow and moves axially towards or away from an axial spring-loaded contact (26) encircled by the main fixed contact (58). An insulating bus (66) in the shape of a tapering ring sits above the tip of the moving contact and lies around the spring-loaded contact and partly inside the fixed main contacts. Thus bus drops down when the moving contact is driven away from the spring-loaded contact.
