<p>Process for improving the characteristics of non-wovens contg. thermoplastic materials, by passing them through the hip of heated calender bowls, one at least of which is embossed in a pattern is described. Any treatment with additives for modifying the characteristics of the fabric, has to be carried out in a separate operation. - Improvement comprises bonding a fabric contg. in its structure distributed thermoplastic material whilst at the same time applying substances to modify the characteristics. The fabric is brought into contact with a transfer band carrying >=1 modifying agent; the band and the fabric being subjected to the action of heat and pressure in different zones spaced some distance from each other. The fabric is thus bonded in these zones and the modifying agent is transferred to the fabric in zones corresponding to them. The modifying additive used improves >=1 of the following or endows them-; pigmenting, affinity for dyestuffs, metallic sheen, resistance to accumulation of static charges, retarded inflammability, bulky appearance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, resistance to breakdown by light. The bonding the application of the additive is effected by passing the fabric and the transfer band through the nip of two cylinders, >=1 of which has a surface pattern of raised zones. The process may be carried out also by passing fabric and transfer band between an ultrasonic energy hammer and an anvil; the anvil being provided with a surface pattern of raised zones. - Woven, needled and/or knitted fabrics are processed by point bonding in a pattern whilst simultaneously applying characteristic modifying additives.</p> |
