Mechanical seal for rotating axially movable shaft - has fixed and rotating seals and support ring for fixed seal

The mechanical seal for a rotating, axially movable shaft is esp. for heavy duty shafts subjected to thermally-induced longitudinal expansion e.g. alternating current generating machines. One sealing element (3) is mounted on the shaft and rotates with it. A threaded nut (5) on the shaft presses the seal against a shoulder (6) on the shaft. A sealing ring (8) of a stationary sealing element (7) is pressed against the rotating sealing element (3) by a spring (9). The fixed seal is held by a support ring (12) which is movable axially with the shaft. The support ring is prevented from rotating by several holder pins (24) between the housing (1) and ring.
