1512325 Grafted starches SANYO CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 March 1976 [27 March 1975] 11523/76 Heading C3P A water-absorbing resin is produced by polymerizing (A) at least one starch and (B) at least one monomer having a polymerizable double bond which is water-soluble or becomes watersoluble by hydrolysis and adding a cross-linking agent (C) at the start of the reaction, as the reaction proceeds, or to the polymerized product of starch (A) and monomer (B) and, if necessary subjecting the resultant product to hydrolysis. Examples are given in which resins are produced by (i) polymerizing starch with (a) acrylamide and methylenebis acrylamide (MBA), (b) hydroxyethyl methacrylate and MBA, (c) acrylic acid, sodium acrylate and MBA, (d) acrylamide ethyl acrylate and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate, (e) N,N,N-trimethyl-N-acryloxyethylammonium chloride and MBA, (f) acrylic acid, acrylamide and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (the resulting graft polymer being hydrolysed), and (g) acrylic acid and trioxyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate; or (ii) polymerizing starch with acrylic acid in the presence of calcium oxide, the resulting graft polymer being hydrolysed. The resin may be used in the preparation of absorbent dressings. |
