A roll or coil paint marking device marks a roll, coil etc. with a series of characters in liquid or powder form by means of a plate in the form of an endless belt or a cylinder in which the characters are stamped out. The cylinder has a flanged part for marking the edge section of the roll or coil and a convex surface for marking the roll or coil surface. Jacks can displace the plate with respect to both the axis of the roll or coil and transversely thereof. The plate can also be displaced independently of the jacks by rollers. Powder nozzles are mounted on the cylinders and on the flanged parts of the cylinders to supply those parts with the marker powder. The device can be used on hot stock as well as cold. It enables marking on hot stock to be performed in safety.
