Machining unit comprises a round table arranged on a displaceable table, a horizontal tool spindle located in a spindle box, a tool magazine and a tool changer. The round table (20) has a horizontal axis which is vertical to that of the tool spindle (36). The table (14) carrying the round table and its drive is only displaceable linearly in a vertical direction, whilst the spindle box (24) on a cross slide (26) is movab le in a horizontal plane in crossways and lengthways directions to the round table axis. The cross slide (26) advance drives (32, 34) are arranged on the side of the unit away from the machining position. Swarf and coolant tanks (56) are removably located under the work position.
