The coal cutting drum with a spiral structure around it carrying the picks, has the drum wall (7) made in two halves, split across the centre line. Cooling water can be conveyed through the spiral structure for discharge around the cutting region. The water is fed through tubes with fittings mounted on the end of the drum, into a zone between two plates spaced apart inside the drum, and fed independently to both halves. The water passes through holes in the drum into the hollow interior of the spiral structure. Hollow intermediate members (30) offset from the space between the two rings communicate with this hollow interior. At one end of the drum is a flange (8) which carries a ring on which is mounted a set of picks.
