Latex particles are coated with a 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP)-substd. biologically active material (I), pref. an immunological complex component, esp. an antibody, antigen or immunoglobulin IgA or IgM. Prepn. is by substituting (I) with DNP before bonding to the particles. Also new is the direct latex particle agglutination assay of immune complexes and their components, by incubating the sample with latex particles coated with non-human IgM antibodies with reduced affinity towards the component of the complex. Used in assays utilising immunological latex particle agglutination, esp. for IgA and IgM immunoglobulins, viral, bacterial and food antigens and in assays using specific antibodies with reduced affinity to immune complex components. Electronic particle counters or visual evaluation can be used. Blood and urine samples may be analysed. A wider variety of materials (I) can be bonded to the particles than in previous methods, which were typically restricted to TgG only.
