The hay conditioning device either receives the crop directly from the mower, or picks it up from the ground. A roller (1) is arranged behind the conditioning device in the region of the emerging material flow. This roller rotates on a shaft (12) which is horizontal and transverse to the feed direction of the conditioning device. The roller (11) can be adjusted vertically with respect to the conditioning device, and is so arranged that the material flow acts on the roller above its axis of rotation and effects a clockwise rotation of the roller.
