A shock absorber consists of a cylinder (1) and a piston (2) operating in a viscous medium consisting of bitumen (3) with a filler of metal wire (4). By using a filler of metal wire of from 1% to 20% of the volume of bitumen the heat generated is conducted to the cylinder walls and dissipated so that the viscosity of the medium does not suffer a drastic change. The shock absorber is thus able to work effectively at higher temperatures.
