To circumvent the compromise in the equalizer design normally made in the case of known PCM intermediate amplifiers, the equalizer is divided into two part-equalizers. At the output of the first part-equalizer (3), with a flat extent of the edge of the Nyquist low-pass function, the circuits for level control (8) and for recovering the line clock signal (9) are connected, whilst at the output of the second part-equalizer (4), which produces a steep variation in this edge, the decision circuit (5) and, in series therewith, the output circuit (6) are connected. This results in good level control and clock recovery and, at the same time, a narrow noise bandwidth. <IMAGE>
