Algin is formed by adding hydrogen peroxide or hydrogen peroxide cpds. in concns. of 3-20% to seaweeds at 30-80 degrees C so as to peel the hull thereof and extracting the treated seaweeds with alkalis such as Na2CO3, (NH4)2CO3, NaOH, etc. Brown algaes, such as wakame seaweed are pref. In the peeling step, acids such as sulphuric acid or alkalis such as sodium carbonate, etc. may be added (pH 4-8). Algin acting as emulsifier, stabiliser and water-absorbing agent is used as water-soluble ointment, tackifier, sizing agent, finishing agent for leather or textile, paste, etc. |
