A flat heating element for an electric toaster, with one or more conductors wound in a number of loops between opposite sides of an insulating frame, with oneo r more insulating spacer bars inserted at intervals through the loops. Some of the spacer bars (30) are designed to clamp the conductors (19) and intermediate bars (20) may serve only as spacers. The unit may be assembled simply by winding and applying the clamps to the winding as a pair of flat bars which are clamped together.
