摘要 1,169,485. Selective embossing. J. K. FULKS. 18 Jan., 1968 [18 Jan., 1967], No. 2729/68. Heading B6F. In a machine for selectively embossing alphanumeric indicia into a workpiece, a plurality of dies 67 are supported in an index plate 53, the dies being locatable at an impression station beneath a hammer 96. Type wheel construction.-The index plate 53 comprises a disc having slots 55 in its periphery, and rings 59, 60 each having notches in one end surface thereof co-operating with the slots 55, are located coaxially with the index plate to define rectangular apertures 62 which receive the dies 67. A further ring 63 having notches in its lower surface is located outside the rings 59, 60 to define with the slots 55 apertures 70 for alignment for impression. Type-selecting.-The index plate 53 is rotatably mounted in a ring 41 and is keyed to an electrically conductive cylinder 38 by a dowel pin 51 for rotation therewith. The cylinder 38 is rotated by a motor 15 through a sun gear 26 keyed to the shaft thereof, planet gears 24 and a ring gear 32. Brushes 73, each corresponding to a die 67, contact the outer surface of the cylinder 38. Each brush 73, and the cylinder 38 are connected in series with the motor drive circuit, so that when a brush is energized, the cylinder is set in rotation until the circuit is broken by the brush coming into contact with a corresponding insulating plug 74 set in the cylinder 38. The brushes 73 may be energized through push-button switches, a typewriter, a keyboard, tape, or punched cards. Aligning for impression; hammer impression.-When a selected die 67 is located at the impression station, fluid pressure acts within a cylinder 79 to lower a slide 84, which carries an aligning finger 87 which engages the aperture 70 and accurately locates the die, and an anvil 92 which pushes the die 67 into contact with the work-piece against a leaf spring 69. A second cylinder 81 is then operated through one of a plurality of valves 100, 101, 102, to depress a hammer 96 and effect an impression through the anvil 92. Impact adjustment.-The valves 100-102 each operate the hammer 96 with a different predetermined force, to equalize the depths of impression into the workpiece according to the strike area of the indicium on the die.
