Vinyl chloride is obtained by the catalytic oxychlorination of ethylene with hydrogen chloride and an oxygen-containing gas, wherein the molar ratio of ethylene to hydrogen chloride is 0À6:1 to 1:1 and the minimum molar ratio of oxygen-containing gas to hydrogen chloride is 1À25: 1, and the cracking of the ethylene dichloride so formed, hydrogen chloride formed in the cracking step being recycled to the oxychlorination reactor and the unreacted ethylene in the effluent from the oxychlorination reactor being separated, combined with fresh ethylene and reacted with chlorine to give further ethylene dichloride for supply to the cracking reactor. The oxychlorination catalyst, which may be in the form of a fixed or fluidized bed, a fused salt or an aqueous solution, may be copper chloride or a mixture of copper chloride with alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and/or heavy metal salts, optionally supported on γ-alumina, silica or active carbon and optionally in admixture with an inert diluent, e.g. α - alumina or silicon carbide. The chlorination may be effected in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. iron chloride or aluminium chloride and/or a solvent, e.g. ethylene dichloride, and the cracking process may be carried out in the presence of a cracking promotor, e.g. chlorine, a polyhalogenated methane or a metal halide, and/or a side-reaction inhibitor, |
