An orthopaedic chair is fitted with a shaped backrest. The bottom part of the backrest presents an incorporated bulge (2) which supports the spine and insures a comfortable seating position. The chair is orthopaedic only in its conception and not in its appearance. The shaped piece held in the backrest to support the small of the back of the person seated can be of a hard or soft material. Like the seat (4) it is then covered by the upholstery (3). The frame of the back (1) is rigid.
