An organosilsesquioxane comprising 75- 100 mole per cent of chemically combined CH 3 SiO 1 . 5 units, 0-25 mole per cent of C 6 H 5 SiO 1 . 5 units and 0-5 mole per cent of (CH 3 ) 2 SiO units and having the average unit formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1-8 alkyl radical, a is 0À7-1À05, b is 0-0À25, and a+b is 1À0-1À05, c is 0À02- 0À08 and d is 0À005-0À06, may be prepared by adding with agitation to an organoalkoxysilane material in an organic solvent at least 1À5 moles of water per mole of silane in the presence of a cosolvent sufficient to produce a substantially homogeneous hydrolysis product mixture, then adding further water, to form a heterogeneous mixture from which the organic phase is recovered and stripped of volatiles, the organoalkoxysilane material being (A) a mixture of methyldialkoxyhalosilane and a minor amount of methyltrialkoxysilane, or (B) a mixture of at least 75 mole per cent of (A) with up to 25 mole per cent of phenyltrihalosilane, or (C) the product from methyltrihalosilane, containing up to 5 mole per cent of dimethyldichlorosilane and up to 25 mole per cent of phenyltrihalosilane and 2-2À6 moles per mole of silane of an aliphatic monohydric alcohol. In Example 1 CH 3 SiCl 3 is reacted with isopropanol, and the product mixture in toluene is agitated with aqueous acetone, and subsequently with water, and the organic layer is separated and concentrated; in Example 2 the aqueous acetone is added to a CH 3 SiCl 3 /C 6 H 5 SiCl 3 mixture in toluene; in Example 3 aqueous 1: 4-dioxane is added to CH 3 Si(OCH 3 ) 2 Cl/CH 3 Si(OCH 3 ) 3 in xylene; in Example 4 CH 3 SiCl 3 /C 6 H 5 SiCl 3 is added to aqueous diethylether. The products are powdered; that of Example 1 is used as a binder, or mixed with SiO 2 filler and lead acetate. |
