The automatic transmission has an infinitely variable hydraulic transmission and a fixed ratio gear box, in series with a torque converter. The gear change control operates in two modes, with and without a change in the fixed ratio so that a smooth torque is assured. If the fixed ratio changes then the engine torque and the hydraulic system are altered correspondingly. The system can be applied to specialised vehicles and commercial vehicles.
