To monitor the cell voltage and the currents flowing in the cells of an electrolysis plant, a number of measuring instruments (4) corresponding to the number of cells is provided. The instruments tap off the currents at predetermined measuring points. Downstream of each measuring instrument is an evaluation device (5 to 9) which evaluates measured values which fall below or exceed limit values as fault signals. The evaluation devices are connected via a signal line (13) and via one control line (12) in each case to a control unit (11) which optionally triggers the evaluation devices individually or jointly and feeds the fault signals to the indicating device (18, 19). An electrolysis plant having a multiplicity of cells can be monitored with a minimum time expenditure using this device. <IMAGE>
