CURABLE COATING COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING N-VINYL COMPOUNDS

1511716 Copolymerizable mixtures of N,N<1>- divinyl compounds BASF AG 27 Aug 1975 [28 Aug 1974] 35316/75 Heading C3P Curable coating compositions contain (A) one or more olefinically mono- or poly-unsaturated compounds, with molecular weights of from 70-20,000 and boiling points above 50‹ C. (numerous examples listed) and (B) one or more N-vinyl compounds copolymerizable with A but differing therefrom with a molecular weight of from 110-2000 wherein component B carries, per molecule, at least two N-vinyl groups and at least one carbonyl group bonded to the nitrogen of at least one N-vinyl group. Component B is preferably an N,N<1>-divinyl compound of the formula in which R<1> and R<11> are identical or different and are independently hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl, each of not more than 12 carbon atoms and each optionally substituted by oxo, carbonyl, carbalkoxy, hydroxyl, alkoxy, or amino or R<1> and R<11> are linked to form a 5-membered to 7-membered heterocyclic ring (numerous examples listed). In the examples compounds A used are: an unsaturated polyester derived from an ester of phthalic anhydride and propylene glycol; butane-1,4- diol diacrylate; an unsaturated urethane derived from hydroxypropyl acrylate and hexamethylene diisocyanate; a methyl methacrylate/ acrylic acid copolymer; a polyamide derived from hexamethylene adipate 4,4<1>-diaminodicyclohexylmethane adipate, #-caprolactam, triethylene glycol bis-acrylamide and the diether obtained by the reaction of 1 mole of ethylene glycol and 2 moles of N-methylolacrylamide, an epoxy resin acrylate derived from bisphenol-A- epoxy resin and ethylene glycol diacrylate, a urethane-acrylate derived from bis-biuret-isocyanate and hydroxypropylacrylate and a urethane-acrylate derived from the reaction of bis - (3 - methyl - 4 - isocyanato - cyclohexyl)- methane with hydroxypropylacrylate. Compounds B used are divinylpropylene urea; N,N<1>- divinyl - 5,5 - dimethylpropylene urea, N,N<1>-divinyldimethylpropylene urea, and N,N<1>-divinylethylene urea.
