Electrostatic printer has a writing electrode (21) movable along the print line and an opposite electrode (54) in the form of a platen extending the full length of the line and supporting the printing paper (51). A discharge mask (41) arranged between the writing electrode and the paper cooperates to define individual dots. Between the writing electrode and the mask is provided a rod (31) electrode which extends the full length of the line and which is connected to generate a local glow discharge which follows the movement of the writing electrode. Charging of the paper is effected by current flow from the glow through the mask to the platen electrode.
