The tread plate (1) has two steps joined at spaced intervals by ribs (3). The ribs may run vertically to the steps or join at an angle of 45 deg. or less. The height of the ribs is about one fifth that of the steps. The ribs may also cross each other at an angle of 45 deg. The tread plate may be formed with only one step with a hinged part and tread plate running parallel to it. The ribs may or may not join into the hinged part. The bolt holes are made in the base plate where no ribs are present.
