Data output by printing of recording carriers and display of characters to be printed uses luminescent or laser beam emitting semiconductor elements. From the arrangement of semiconductor elements a number corresponding to the characters to be output is selected. The state characterizing the selected elements forms the basis for the display as well as for the thermoprint of the corresponding character. The luminescent or laser beam emitting elements selected for the display of one or more characters form the printing body for a thermoprint method. The elements intended for use are provided selectively for light radiation as well as for light radiation and thermal dissipation.
