A flat armature making a rectilinear or rotary movement is used in motors or other magnetic systems. It is used esp. in connection with a permanent magnet stator and a printed circuit coil fed with steady or pulsed DC in a control system. The armature is built of a plastics or ceramic supporting body having 10 to 18% of distributed soft magnetic material distributed in it. This may be of any material with high permeability and low coercivity, such as ferrous alloy, soft iron, or a ferrite. This permits an improvement in performance or a reduction in size for equal bulk. The system is particularly applicable to the operating magnets of high-speed hammer-operated printers.
