The pump for the power steering system for a motor vehicle supplies hydraulic fluid under pressure through a valve to the power steering. The valve includes an opening with a variable surface and a control slider which moves through the valve bore of the valve housing into a balancing position. A separating wall (42) fitted with a passage opening (43) is located in front of the control slider (37). During the movement of the latter into the balancing position, the cut out (44) and the enlarged diameter section are changed in such a way that the opening formed between them is reduced.
