1512163 Differentially tempered glass TRIPLEX SAFETY GLASS CO Ltd 23 Feb 1977 [5 March 1976] 08995/76 Heading C1M A glass sheet of thickness 2À5-3À5 mm. is differentially quenched to form highly toughened regions 26 interspersed with regions 27 which are less toughened, the average central tensile stress in the sheet being 53-62 MN/m.<SP>2</SP>, and there being areas 28, 29 in which the principal stresses acting in the plane of the sheet are unequal, the principal stress difference in said areas being at a maximum of 8-25 MN/m.2, the major principal stresses in adjacent areas 28, 29 of maximum stress difference being in different directions 30, 31, and the distance x being centres of such areas being 15-30 mm. The pattern shown is produced by vertical oscillation of a high pressure quenching frame (the positions of blowing apertures 18 are shown). Quenching jets which are stationary or in circular motion may also be employed . |
