[Also in Division B8] A drum 7 for the transport and supply of steel wire strands 1 for the manufacture of steel cord carcasses for vehicle tyres has wound on it a plurality of strands of the same length which tightly adjoin one another to form a coil, a band 12 being laid between the separate layers of the coil, the width of the coil being equal to or slightly larger than the sum of the diameters of the strands in each layer, and the length of the coil in the axial direction being substantially equal to the width of the band. The band 12 is preferably a steel band, the surface of which is smooth and hard chromium-plated to prevent corrosion. The length of the band is such that the outer convolution of the band covers the outer convolution of the strands. The drum comprises a core 19 the ends of which are threaded to receive flanges 21 which carry strengthening ribs 22. The ends of the wire strands 1 may be welded together prior to winding on the drum.
