A vehicle comprises a pair of wheels 38, 40 mounted on an axle housing 36 incorporating a differential housing 42, a pair of suspension arms 44, 46 pivoted to a chassis 10, 12 and secured to the axle housing 36 and a balancing lever 60 pivotally connected to the axle housing and at its ends to the suspension arms 44, 46. Preferably the balancing lever 60 is in front of and at an angle to the rear wheel axis to equalize the loads on the wheels on acceleration. The rear axle is sprung by rear torsion bars 68, 70 having inwardly directed arms 71, 82 connected to the suspension arms 44, 46 by tension links 74, 86. The forward ends of the torsion bars 68, 70 are mounted in brackets 30, 34 which are resiliently mounted on a chassis crossmember 32 and are secured to front torsion bars 22, 24 having ends 26, 28 secured to front wishbones 14, 16 to provide a conjugate suspension. |
