Clavulanic acid derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new: In (I) R is a monoacylamino or dicarboximido gp; R1 is opt. esterified COOH). Cpds. (I) are (i) beta-lactamase inhibitors useful for protecting penicillin- and cephalosporin-type antibiotics from attack by beta-lactamasses produced by Gram-positive and negative bacteria, and (ii) antibiotics active against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria, including lactamase-producing strains. A typical cpd. is Na (3R, 5R, Z)-2-(2-acetamidoethylidene)-clavam-3-carboxylate. In an example, this is prepd. from (3R, 5R, Z)-2-(2-amino-ethylidene)-clavam-3-carboxylic acid and acetic anhydride.
|
