In the process and by means of the construction train, the existing surface-layer material is heated up, loosened and levelled by means of a first unit and, by means of a second unit which comprises a road finisher, a new surface-layer material is incorporated and both surface layers are compacted together. In order to break up the existing surface-layer material, a scarifier (40), having rows of scarifying spikes (42) running transversely to the feed direction, is used. The scarifying spikes of neighbouring rows are spaced apart; as a result, the material which has been broken up has to effect a winding movement, a pre-distribution of the material which has been broken up thus being achieved directly after the breaking-up process. In a following transverse distribution apparatus (120), the material which has been broken up is further distributed in a uniform manner. <IMAGE>
