The prepn. of 1,2-dichloroethane comprises by oxychlorination of ethylene in the presence of a Cu chloride catalyst on a support of alumina, with concns. in Cu of 1-20 wt.%. The support consists of eta-, theta-, eta-, delta-, or chi -alumina or a mixt. of these oxides. The reaction occurs in (series of) reactors fo which >=1 is subdivided into succesive reaction zones, with increasing catalystic activity. The first reaction zone at least of the subdivided reactor(s) contains the supported catalyst as described. The catalytic system gives an increase in the yield of 1,2-dichloroethane, compared with catalytic systems using Cu chloride on a gamma-alumina support. The formation of chlorinated sec. prods. and of ethylene oxides is reduced, that of ethylene chloride e.g. by 30-50 wt.%.
|
