The foam-producing unit for carpet shampoo cleaning etc. uses the air circulated by the vacuum cleaner to produce a foam from a cleaning liquid which is supplied to a sponge (11) which is mounted in a housing chamber (12) provided with outlet openings (13) for the cleaning foam. The sponge is squeezed intermittently along at least part of its surface by a drive unit (6) which is moved by the intake air of the vacuum cleaner. The sponge is pref. disc-shaped and set between a pressure plate (9) which is moved to and fro by the drive unit (6) and a counter pressure plate (10) set in the housing chamber (12). The foam produced in this way is drier than foam produced by blowing air into the fluid.
