The conveyor includes a belt and driving drum and driving rollers and intermediate drives provided with a number of rotating units. The driving force transmitted by the driving drum and the driving rollers and the intermediate drives on the driven belt is increased by additional suction forces. The additional suction forces are produced by a vacuum between the conveyor belt and a driving belt or force transmitting surfaces. The driving belt forms a suction belt with dished shaped suction projections spaced across its longitudinal direction and is made from an elastic material with higher co-efficient of friction than the conveyor belt. The suction belt is in driving contact with the top run and the bottom run of the conveyor belt.
