New 1-methoxyalkyl-2-sulphates are of formula R-CH(OSO3M)-CH2-O-CH3 (I) (where R is (branched) 8-20 C alkyl and M is Na, K, NH4 or an organic ammonium base cation). The use of (I), as surfactants, in detergent- and cleansing compsns. contg. builders for the complex bonding of lime water-hardeners and metal ions, is claimed. (I) have a high washing power, esp. towards wool and synthetic fibre textiles. Their washing power exceeds that of internal, vicinal methoxysulphates, e.g. reaching 80% on washing wool compared with 71% for controls. (I) do not irritate the skin and can also be used for washing dishes by hand, for shampoos and skin cleansers. (I) are degraded biologically and do not harm organisms living in water.
