Carbonate extended polyoxyalkylene di:ol(s) - prepd. by reacting bis:aryl carbonate(s) with polyoxyalkylene diol(s)

Polyoxyalkylene diols (I) with Mn >135 and chain extended by carbonate bonds -OC(O)O- are prepd. by reacting (I) with bisaryl carbonates (II) at 100-200 degrees C and 35 torr in the presence of catalysts and distilling of the formed hydroxyaryl cpd. Less than 1 mol. (II) is used per OH gp. Process proceeds with few side reactions e.g. etherification of the terminal OH gps. and the mol. wt. distribution of (I) remains unchanged although the mol. wt. is raised. The prod. may be used for block copolymers, elastic sealants, tubing and electrical insulation and have improved phase separation properties.
