Mono-ethers of 1,2-dihydroxybenzene are prepared by dehydrogenating a monoenol ether of 1,2-cyclohexane dione of Formula I where R is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical optionally substituted by alkoxy groups, or is an araliphatic radical or is a #-ethylmercap to ethoxy radical with sulphur. The reaction may take place in an inert solvent e.g. diphenyl, diphenyl ether, naphthalene at 150-350‹ C. In examples R is an ethyl, isopropyl, cyclqpentyl, cyclohexyl, n-hexyl, methoxyethyl, 2-methylpropyl, 3-methoxy-butyl, #-phenylethyl or #- ethoxymercapto ethoxy radical. Compounds of Formula I are prepared by reacting cyclohexane 1,2-dione hemihydrate with the appropriate alcohol ROH in the presence of an acid catalyst. Cyclohexane-1,2-dione hemihydrate is prepared by reacting cyclohexanol with nitric acid and sulphuric acid. |
