Brake for cover of toilet seat has a pull spring which is tensioned during the downward movement of the cover. The brake includes a rope (6) which runs over a fixed drum (8) with at least one complete turn one end of which is anchored to a point (7) within the rear area of the cover (2) at a distance from the swivel axis (3). The other end (10) of the rope is attached to the spring (11) with the relative positions of the fixed drum and the anchoring point of the rope to the cover chosen in such a way that the downward movement of the cover creates a tension in the rope. The end of the spring (11) opposite to the attachment point of the rope (6) is connected to a tension adjustment screw (12).
