The activating device for temporarily activating a binding layer (5) is applied to shoe soles prior to gluing includes an I. R. radiator (2) which sends rays flat down and a carrier (3) which has a socket for the coated sole (4) and is moved up to the radiator from below. Since the carrier and thus sole are moved vertically up to the radiator and not in from the sides a uniform heating of the sole coated with the binding agent is obtained without any extra heat being applied to the edges. The carrier can be moved vertically in the machine housing by a suitable rhythmic drive such as a servomotor (6, 7) and is held stationary in each position for a brief period. For easier handling by the operator swivel arms can be fitted to allow the carrier to be moved into and out of its position beneath the I. R. radiator.
