Winch for compact winding of a wire consists of a spool with groove-shaped catching equipment for the end of the wire. The catching groove is located in a corner between the spool flange and mandrel and surrounds the latter as a circumferential ring. The catching groove radially projects towards the spool mandrel in such a way that its side surface adjoins the spool flange is positioned in the same plane as the inner surface of the spool flange. At least one side surface of the catching groove is formed by a tensioning ring which is relatively displaceable in the axial direction to the spool mandrel. The front end of the wire is pressed by the tensioning ring against opposite side surfaces of the catching groove and thereby rigidly held in position. The tensioning ring or its segments are pneumatically or electromagnetically operated.
