Continuous generation of water gas from carbonaceous material - esp. waste, with reduced carbon di:oxide content of prod. gas

Method comprises (A) feeding the material with water into a closed retort, (B) forming a temp. gradient in the retort by heating the bottom part to >100 degrees C, (C) moving the material through the retort, and (D) drawing off the water-gas produced. Pref. oxygen is extracted from the retort after charging, and the solid reaction residue is removed. The process and equipment can be operated continuously. Yield of gas can be increased from the usual 40% to 95% and the CO2 content of the prod. gas is reduced.
