1510024 Methionine DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT 24 April 1975 [2 May 1974] 17008/75 Heading C2C A process for making methionine comprises (a) hydrolysing 5-(#-methyl-mercaptoethyl)- hydantoin at an elevated temperature and pressure with an aqueous solution of potassium carbonate or bicarbonate whilst removing ammonia and carbon dioxide (b) precipitating methionine from the resulting solution with carbon dioxide (c) concentrating the mother liquor remaining after the separation of methionine (d) carbonating this mother liquor whilst cooling it whereby to precipitate further methionine and potassium bicarbonate and (e) returning at least part of the mother liquor to the initial reaction mixture or discharging it to the environment.
