1470461 Cyano-substituted bis-styryl compounds CIBA-GEIGY AG 12 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 48975/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Compounds of the formula wherein A represents 1,4-, 1,5- or 2,6-naphthylene, 1,4-phenylene or 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bis-phenylene, either X 1 represents CN and X 2 represents H, Cl or F, or X 2 represents CN and X 1 represents H, Cl or C 1-4 alkyl, and each of R 1 and R 2 independently represents H, Cl, F or C 1-4 alkoxy, may be obtained by reacting a toluene derivative of the formula with a Schiff's base of the formula wherein Y 1 represents H or Cl, in DMF and in the presence of a sodium alcoholate at 0-40‹ C. The reaction is generally effected with the exclusion of air using from equivalent to twice the equivalent amount of toluene derivative based on the amount of Schiff's base. The products may be used to optically brighten organic materials. |
