1510330 Coated products MONSANTO CO 2 July 1976 [3 July 1975] 27614/76 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] An adhesive - coated steel reinforcing member comprises a steel substrate having a structure of martensite, bainite or a mixture of these, in which there is adhered to the surface of the substrate a continuous organic adhesive coating and the interface between the substrate and the coating is characterised by a layer of degraded adhesive. The steel may be in the form of a monofilament having a circular cross - section or a rectangular cross - section of aspect ratio less than 25 or it may be a plurality of filaments stranded together. It may be made by passing a freshly austenitized steel member through an organic adhesive coating bath at a rate sufficient to form a quenched structure of martensite, bainite or a mixture of these and to form a layer of degraded adhesive at the interface between the member and the coating, followed by heat treatment of the member to dry and cure the adhesive coating and to temper the steel member. The steel members have increased adhesion to rubber. The adhesive may be an epoxy resin, an unsaturated silane or an RFL resin system or a butadiene - styrene - vinyl pyridine latex. |
